The Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso welcomed a visit from the Defense Attaché of the German Embassy in Chile, Colonel Christian Rauwolf, accompanied by his office manager Sascha Peters, in a meeting aimed at learning about advances in research and exploring possible opportunities for international cooperation.
The meeting was attended by the Director General of International Affairs at PUCV, Professor Orlando de la Vega Luna, along with academics Sebastián Fingerhuth, professor at the School of Electrical Engineering, and Christoffer Löffler, professor at the School of Computer Engineering.
The reason for the visit was the German Defense Attaché's interest in the joint research work being carried out by Professors Löffler and Fingerhuth, focused on the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, an issue of great international relevance that also involves institutions such as the Chilean Navy.
This project is being prepared in collaboration with German research institutions, including the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (Fraunhofer IIS) and the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (Leibniz-IZW), with the aim of advancing technological and scientific solutions that contribute to the monitoring and control of illegal fishing activities.
The visit was the first meeting between the two German officials at PUCV, providing an opportunity to tour the university's facilities and discuss future opportunities for scientific and technological collaboration.
The German Embassy in Chile, and Colonel Rauwolf in particular, have followed the development of this initiative with interest. It seeks to strengthen cooperation between academic and scientific institutions in Chile and Germany on global challenges related to the protection of marine resources.
