Former Minister of Justice of Peru, Marisol Perez Tello visited PUCV

Within the framework of a visit that has left profound lessons and experiences, the former Minister of Justice of Peru, Marisol Pérez Tello, has played an essential role in a series of activities and conversations of great relevance. These valuable initiatives were carried out thanks to the collaboration between the Academy of Catholic Leaders and the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso (PUCV), with the support of the General Directorate of International Affairs, under the coordination of the International Project Director, Ignacio Bahamonde. Former Minister Pérez Tello began her participation in the Center for Advanced Studies of the PUCV on Tuesday, August 29. It was in this scenario where she took part in the Colloquium entitled "Human Rights and Democracy". During this event, he shared his knowledge and experience with prominent personalities such as the former President of Costa Rica, Miguel Angel Rodriguez, and the former Minister of Economy of Chile, Carlos Ominami. The discussion was moderated by Professor Juan Pablo Faúndez, President of the Academic Committee of the International Academy of Catholic Leaders. It should be noted that Professor Faúndez also serves as Director of the International Chair of Social Doctrine of the Church at the PUCV and is a prominent professor in the Ecclesiastical Faculty of Theology of the institution.

The agenda of former Minister Perez Tello continued on Wednesday, August 30 with her participation in the event entitled "Comparative Experience on Social Reinsertion as an End of the Penalty and its Post-Prison Effect". This colloquium was organized by the School of Social Work of the PUCV, under the direction of Dr. Edgardo Toro, who brought together a select group of guests. Among them was the President of the Court of Appeals of Valparaíso, Mrs. Rosario Lavín, as well as representatives of the National Commission of Social Pastoral and Prison Pastoral of the Episcopal Conference of Chile, representatives of the Diocese of Valparaíso and leaders of Gendarmería of the Valparaíso Region.

In the afternoon of the same day, the former Minister also participated in the Colloquium on "Human Rights and Democracy", an event organized by the PUCV Law School and led by Dr. Maria Graciela Brantt, Dean of the Law School. These enriching activities addressed a wide range of aspects related to social reintegration and the persistent challenges facing the region.

In summary, these initiatives reflect the transcendental importance of education, dialogue and collaboration among leaders and experts from different countries and disciplines to address complex problems and promote social development in Latin America. The experience and knowledge shared during these events lay the foundation for addressing the challenges related to social reintegration and human rights in the region in an effective and meaningful way.

The visit of the former Minister culminated her activities that day with an International Discussion in the Hall of Honor of the Central House of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, where the theme "Towards a New Constitution for Chile: The Need for Dialogue to Achieve Common Minimums" was addressed. Leading experts participated in this discussion, including Paz Anastasiadis Le Roy and Carlos Frontaura Rivera, both members of the Expert Commission on the Constitutional Process 2023, representing different political parties. In addition, the discussion was attended by the distinguished presence of Monsignor Jorge Vega Velasco, Bishop of the Diocese of Valparaiso and Grand Chancellor of the institution, the Vice Grand Chancellor, Cristian Eichin, and the Rector Nelson Vasquez Lara, Monsignor, as well as other relevant figures of the university and the academic community. This activity highlights the importance of collaboration and dialogue in the construction of a new constitution that reflects the aspirations and needs of the Chilean people, in line with the institutional commitment of the PUCV and the Academy of Catholic Leaders.

It is important to mention that former Minister Marisol Pérez Tello had the opportunity to meet with a group of Peruvian students who are doing an exchange program at PUCV and who shared their experiences during their stay at the institution. To conclude the visit, on Friday, September 1, Pérez Tello also participated in the 421 Solidarity Dining Room of the Matriz Church, where she was able to learn about the work being done to help the community. The Comedor Solidario 421 provides support to the homeless and those in need of help in Valparaíso, providing them with food, clothing and a place for healthy recreation. On Sundays, medical and nursing services are offered, as well as haircuts. This shelter has gained great prestige over time thanks to the efforts of its volunteers and the contributions of anonymous people who collaborate so that it can continue to carry out its valuable charitable work.
