Polish Priest Begins Pastoral Mission in Chile

Polish priest Edward, 51, has fulfilled his dream of a missionary trip to South America by arriving in Chile on January 22. With 25 years of experience, Edward chose Chile because of its mild climate and his quick adaptation to the new conditions.

Under a preliminary contract between the Diocese of Poland and the Diocese of Valparaiso, Edward plans to stay in Chile for the next 5 years. He currently resides in a parish in Viña del Mar, where he assists in 3 churches and 6 chapels.

Despite his vast experience, Edward faces linguistic challenges as he participates in an intensive Spanish course in February, focusing on grammar and knowledge of Chilean culture. "It is a fact that Chileans speak very fast and use many words, the so-called chilenismos, which I did not learn in Europe," the priest comments.

Edward plans to begin his pastoral service at PUCV in early March and to lecture at the Faculty of Theology in August as a Licensed Doctor of Theology.

Despite the warm welcome and enthusiasm for his arrival, Edward finds himself in the shadow of the recent tragedy that struck Chile, with fires that claimed the lives of more than 130 people and destroyed more than 1,600 homes, including a church where he recently celebrated the Eucharist. Actively participating in organizing food aid for those affected, Edward highlights the solidarity and helpful spirit of Chileans in times of adversity.

Edward's commitment to his pastoral mission in Chile reflects his dedication to serving others and his willingness to adapt to the challenges he faces in his new land of service.
