Tsunami Diploma Closing Ceremony

The General Directorate of International Affairs of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso celebrated the closing of the Diploma in Tsunamis, a unique training program in the region, organized within the framework of the "Building Resilience and Sustainable Societies in the Face of Disasters in Latin America and the Caribbean, KIZUNA II" project. The objective of this program was to train professionals from Latin America and the Caribbean in the comprehensive understanding of tsunamis, their hazards and vulnerabilities, thus strengthening warning and emergency response systems in the region.

During the closing ceremony, the final words were given by the Director of International Projects, Ignacio Bahahomde, and PUCV professor Marco Cisternas.

This diploma course lasted two weeks and had a multidisciplinary focus. The participants studied various topics in depth, such as the threat and vulnerability posed by tsunamis, and operational training in warning systems. A key topic was Chile's National Tsunami Warning System, considered one of the most advanced in the world. In the first class, attendees focused on the scientific basis of tsunamis, with emphasis on the advances made in Chile, a leading country in the field due to its vast experience with seismic events and tsunamis.

The course, which was supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), AGCID and SENAPRED, stood out for its comprehensive approach and the participation of international experts in the field.
